SOLO PROJECTS
In late 2019 I began pursuing self-started projects that vary in length. They typically involve a series of images that focus on preparation and consistency.
I participated in the Kinokuniya USA bookstore tote bag design contest, wherein artists submitted original designs intended for official canvas tote products sold at Kinokuniya's nationwide brick and mortar locations. The prompt for the 2020 competition was "book," and designs were required to include the word somewhere in the piece.
In Sei Shounagon's Makura no Soushi (The Pillow Book, translated by Ivan Morris), she wrote: In spring it is the dawn that is most beautiful. As the light creeps over the hills, their outlines are dyed a faint red and wisps of purplish cloud trail over them. This design, inspired by Shounagon's words from a millennium ago, depict a band of inquisitive readers. As night turns to dawn, the trio explores each book to uncover the serendipitous revelations that authors have hidden between the lines. They proceed with enthusiasm, knowing that books will take them to places that they have never dreamed of before. |
Maybe you've seen this in stores!

Practicing stable line drawing and limited color palettes has helped me continue developing confident line art. The Pokémon franchise's exceptional character design, to include eight gym leaders per mainline video game, has been a relaxing, nostalgic outlet for these line sketches. Check back for more! |

As a fan of Atsushi Ohkubo’s Soul Eater (2008), I was enthusiastic for the televised debut of Fire Force (2013) while reading the manga. For the eight days leading up to the anime’s release, I prepared a series of chibi illustrations focusing on a character from each brigade. This countdown has also been compiled on Twitter. |
